Jessica Pegula reflects on 2022, opens up on mother’s battle with undisclosed illness

World No 3 Jessica Pegula saw her tennis dreams become a reality in 2022 but off the court it has been a battle as her mother is dealing with an undisclosed illness and that is something very tough for the Pegula family.

This year, Pegula captured her first WTA 1000 title in Guadalajara and broke into the top-10 for the first time in her career.

Now, Pegula is enjoying a career-high ranking of No 3 and she is the top-ranked American female tennis player.

In mid-June, American media reported that Pegula’s mother Kim was hospitalized in Boca Raton ICU.

After one of her Wimbledon wins in late June, Pegula gave a positive update on her mom’s condition as she said that her mother was doing better and that’s why she decided to play at The Championships.

Pegula reflects on 2022

“A lot of people know what a tough year it’s been for my family. I’m not sure how we made it through. All I know is my mom continues to be the strongest person I know. I hope nobody takes for granted their time with family and loved ones around the holidays and every day. I continue to be lucky enough to play a sport I love, that is an escape for me, that challenges me more than anything. Year end #3, tell that to 7 year old me in Wexford, PA and I don’t think I would believe it. Having a dream is an amazing thing, but getting to live it is even more magical. I hope everyone keeps dreaming and striving for more in the new year. Looking forward to maybe a *celebratory* beer post-match presser in 2023. See you all in Aus,” Pegula captioned her Instagram post.

In 2022, Pegula was one of the most consistent players on the WTA Tour.

Now, Pegula is seen as a legitimate title contender wherever she goes and she will certainly be aiming to become a Grand Slam champion in 2023.
