“It looks like an ATP 250,” Nick Kyrgios mocks possible Australian Open semifinalists

on

Nick Kyrgios sarcastically commented on Twitter the scenario that is being created with the possible semifinalists of the Australian Open 2023, who would go on to challenge the winner of the draw led by Novak Djokovic.

The Australian tennis player could have faced the 21-time Grand Slam champion in the quarterfinals, but raised the white flag due to a knee problem. “Nice little ATP 250 going on,” alluding to the players left in the game.

Many names in the running who have never reached the final stages of a Slam, from the very young Americans Ben Shelton, Brandon Holt, to Mmoh, Brooksby, to Popyrin himself. Only once in the semifinals instead for Bautista Agut, in 2019 at Wimbledon.

The same cannot be said for Andy Murray, a regular on the big stages with his three Grand Slam titles.

Many surprises in the Australian Grand Slam

There are many surprises we are witnessing in this first phase of the Australian Open. From the withdrawals a few days before the start of Kyrgios and Carlos Alcaraz, to the premature departures of players such as Rafael Nadal, Taylor Fritz, Matteo Berrettini, unforeseeable scenarios are emerging for some tennis players, who would hardly have gone that far at the starting line.

Especially in the side of the draw led by the American, champion at Indian Wells, who came out surprisingly against the Australian Alexei Popyrin, who, acclaimed by his audience, knocked down the number 8 seed in the seeding.

The same goes for Alexander Zverev, returning from injury, stopped by Michael Mmoh. The exit of our Matteo Berrettini was very painful, who in the first round gave in to three-time slam champion Andy Murray after five hours.

The defeat suffered by Casper Ruud who surrendered to the emerging bomber Jenson Brooksby was also unexpected. Out also the other seeds Diego Schwartman, overtaken by Jeffrey John Wolf, Miomir Kezmanovic already out in the first round against Nicolas Jarry and Alejando Davidovic Fokina, eliminated by Tommy Paul. The only survivor is Roberto Bautista Agut.
