Holger Rune after injury scare at AO: My ankle is good, wrist was hurting a bit

on

Holger Rune said there was nothing to worry about after he rolled his ankle and fell on a wrist during his Australian Open third-round win over Ugo Humbert.

In the first game of the second set, Rune rolled his ankle and fell on his wrist.

After receiving a medical intervention, Rune continued the match and beat Humbert 6-4 6-2 7-6 (5).

“I’m feeling better than I expected. I was a bit worried. My ankle is good but my wrist was hurting a bit, but the doctor checked me and he said it was fine, it’s nothing to worry about. Of course it was painful, but I tried to focus on something else. I’m playing on such an amazing stage in the third round of a Grand Slam, so I didn’t think about it. I just kept going,” Rune said, per the ATP website.

How Rune defeated Humbert

Rune made a fast start to the match, claiming breaks in the third and seventh games to open a 5-2 lead.

Rune failed to serve out for the first set in the eighth game, but managed to do so in his second attempt in the ninth game.

Even though Rune suffered an injury scare at the start of the second set, he still went on to claim back-to-back breaks and to open a 4-0 lead in the set.

Up by two breaks, Rune routinely held on to his serve the rest of the second set to open a two-set lead.

In the third set, no breaks were seen as Rune saved the lone break point of the set in the second game.

In the third-set tie-break, Humbert had a 5-4 lead before Rune won the next three points to win the tie-break and complete a two-set win.

In his next match, Rune plays against Andrey Rublev.

Late in 2022, Rune defeated Rublev en route to winning his first Masters title at the Paris Masters.

It remains to be seen if Rune can beat Rublev again and reach his first Australian Open quarterfinal.
