Jones expresses more interest in staying with New York than he had on Saturday night

Daniel Jones’ Saturday night comments left some room for interpretation as to whether or not the quarterback really wanted to return to the New York Giants for the 2023 season and perhaps beyond.

In the immediate aftermath of Saturday’s season-ending loss to the Philadelphia Eagles Jones said this of his future in New York:

“We’ll cross that bridge when we get there. I’ve really enjoyed playing here. I appreciate all those guys in the locker room. It’s a special group of guys. And I really enjoyed being a part of it. We’ll figure out where that goes, but I have nothing but love and respect for this organization and the guys in the locker room.”

Sunday afternoon, as Giants’ players cleared out their lockers to scatter across the country for the offseason, Jones was more emphatic about wanting to remain with the Giants.

“I love this place. I’ve really enjoyed my time here. I want to be here,” Jones said. “There’s a business side of it all. I lot of that I can’t control. I really love and respect this organization, the ownership, the guys in this locker room.

“I’d love to be here. I’ve really enjoyed being here. We’ll see how it all works out.”

Jones said he “didn’t think there was much truth” to recent reports that he and the Giants were close to an extension that would keep him with the Giants. He would only say that he has had “positive” conversations with GM Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll.

Jones did admit “I’ve got a good sense” of what top quarterbacks around the league are making.

Jones said it was difficult to talk about offseason issues like his contract because the loss to the Eagles was “still very fresh.”

“Right now thinking more about this year and this team, the guys and how grateful I am to be a part of it” Jones said.
