Garena reportedly setting up local servers ahead of Free Fire India release

on

Free Fire India, a localized version of the banned BR game in the country, was announced back on Aug. 31, 2023, but has still not been released. This has happened despite Garena initially saying that Free Fire will release on Sept. 5.

Over seven months later, though, it seems that the game is nearing its eventual release. According to a report by the Economic Times, Garena is finally testing out game servers in India. These servers are reportedly being set up in Yotta Data Services’ Navi Mumbai premises.

It’s not surprising to see this happen. Garena had previously signed an MOU with Yotta to utilize its data services. However, what is surprising is the decision to do that now. On Aug. 31, 2023, it seemed like the game was ready to be released just a few days later. However, Garena later said that it was pushing the release by a few more weeks.

Why Garena didn’t localize its servers first and then commit to the release of Free Fire India remains a mystery.

What to expect from the release of Free Fire India?

Currently, Garena hasn’t confirmed the release date for Free Fire India. In response to the report, the company did confirm that the game will feature a “fully localized infrastructure” – a likely indication of the servers in Navi Mumbai.

Nonetheless, players will be hoping for Free Fire India’s eventual release to be very soon. During its earlier campaign in August 2023, the game partnered with prominent Indian sporting stars, including Sunil Chettri, Leander Paes, Saina Nehwal, and Rahul Chaudhari.

Additionally, the game had announced at the time that cricketing legend MS Dhoni would be the game’s brand ambassador. He would also be added to the game as a character. It remains to be seen if this still happens, though.

Before its ban due to data privacy concerns, Free Fire was one of the most-played mobile games in India. The BR title was loved by millions, particularly due to its low system requirements and evolved esports scene.
