Emma Raducanu: Iga Swiatek was very ruthless

Emma Raducanu praised Iga Swiatek following their Indian Wells match as the Briton used the word ruthless to describe the Pole’s level of play.

In the Indian Wells round-of-16, top-seeded Swiatek ousted Raducanu 6-3 6-1.

“I think that Iga played a very good level and showed why she is number one in the world. She was very ruthless with the way that she played. I think I was able to stay competitive for the beginning of the match but ultimately she ground me down and by the end of it I was just taking way too long to recover from one rally,” Raducanu told BBC Sport.

Raducanu stayed competitive early on but then Swiatek broke her down

Raducanu saved two consecutive break points in the third game but she also missed out on her first two break points in the fourth game.

In the sixth game, Swiatek earned the first break of the match and then Pole then held on to her serve the rest of the set to clinch the opener.

After losing the first set, Raducanu served out the opening game of the second set.

Swiatek then absolutely dominated the rest of the match as the Pole claimed three breaks in a row and won six consecutive games to complete a two-set.

Even though Raducanu didn’t come anywhere near beating Swiatek, she was still pretty happy with her run in Indian Wells.

In the desert, Raducanu managed to beat Danka Kovinic, Magda Linette and Beatriz Haddad Maia.

“I can take a positive week. I think I had a few good wins earlier against some great opponents. I did two good training weeks in London. They paid off to an extent but ultimately two weeks of training isn’t going to cut it against the world number one right now. I’m looking forward to playing her after I’ve got more time under my belt,” Raducanu said.

Next up for Raducanu will be the upcoming Miami Open.
