Ellenborough and Team Bribar aim to stave off challengers

on

Just under 400 players will be vying for honours as the Veterans’ British League plays to a conclusion at over the weekend.

With 15 divisions at two venues – Derby Arena and Draycott & Long Eaton TTC – it makes for one of the busiest weekends of table tennis in the country.

In the women’s Premier Division, leaders Ellenborough will come under threat from defending champions Market Rasen. Both remain unbeaten and drew 3-3 in their match during the first weekend.

Market Rasen drew on two further occasions, so trail by two points. That means they either need a favour from someone else in taking points off the leaders, or will themselves need a perfect weekend, including a victory over Ellenborough in the final round of fixtures, to have a chance of topping the table.

Third-placed Bribar Failand also retain an interest – they are level on points with Market Rasen and held them to a draw last time.

But Ellenborough will rightly be confident, with Sara Williams winning all of her 10 matches on weekend one and Hurey Ahmetoglu winning nine. Both remain in the team.

In the men’s divisions, the Premier is rather more clear-cut as defending champions Team Bribar are four points clear and boast a 100% record, while only losing three individual matches all weekend.

With the same players to call on, it will take a spectacular collapse for them not to retain their title, but second placed Tees Sport will travel in hope, with Topspin Fusion and Foresters a further point behind them.
