Elina Svitolina makes deeply honest admission after shocking Iga Swiatek at Wimbledon

Elina Svitolina admitted after upsetting Iga Swiatek that she didn’t think she would be in this position at the start of Wimbledon. Svitolina, who received a wildcard into Wimbledon, stunned top-seeded Swiatek 7-5 6-7 (5) 6-2 to reach the Wimbledon semifinal. A round earlier, Svitolina beat former world No 1 Victoria Azarenka. Svitolina, who gave birth in October, was in disbelief after clinching another major win and reaching the Wimbledon semifinal in her second Grand Slam tournament since returning from maternity leave.

“I don’t know what is happening right now, it’s unbelievable, I’m really happy I got this chance. It was an unbelievable feeling, I was fighting, she is world number one and always fighting. Iga is not only a great champion she is a great person, she has really helped Ukrainian people. It’s not easy to play someone with whom you share a lot of good moments. Thank you for cheering for me. If at the beginning of the tournament if someone told me I was beating the world number one I would tell them they are crazy,” Svitolina said.

Svitolina: I’m going to have a beer

On Thursday, Svitolina will be meeting Marketa Vondrousova in the Wimbledon semifinal. When asked how she was planning to prepare for the Vondrousova match, Svitolina revealed she first wanted to enjoy a beer.

“Well first of I’m going to have a beer probably!” Svitolina responded.

Vondrousova is certainly a very favorable Grand Slam semifinal matchup for Svitolina. When Svitolina and Vondrousova meet at Wimbledon, it will be their sixth meeting. After Svitolina won their first three meetings, Vondrousova responded by beating the Ukrainian at 2020 Rome and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. But their sixth meeting will also be their first meeting on the grass. It remains to be seen if Svitolina can continue her stunning run and also beat Vondrousova for her first Grand Slam final.
