Former world No 8 Diego Schwartzman revealed his father was hospitalized for three weeks and admitted that worrying about his father’s health has probably impacted his tennis.
At the start of the 2023 season, Schwartzman is just 1-3.
Schwartzman, who was the top-seeded player in the Cordoba main draw, had a first-round bye at the tournament before suffering a 7-6 (6) 6-1 loss to 114th-ranked Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the round-of-16.
“My father was hospitalized for three weeks and just left (the hospital) yesterday. For two weeks I was spending hours in the clinic. These are not excuses, but perhaps I have less patience. I feel more frustration when playing. My personal situation affects me. If you see me train, I’m doing very well and that’s how I feel on a day-to-day basis, but when it comes to competing I’m not feeling my moments. Sometimes I try and I’m wrong, other times I stay a little further behind and I’m wrong. It is difficult to find any clear reason for that other than that sometimes discomfort is combined with a bad moment of confidence and it results in a bad play,” Schwartzman explained, per Punto de Break.
Schwartzman suffers early exit in Cordoba
The first break of the match was seen in the fourth game, when Cerundolo broke Schwartzman for a 3-1 lead.
However, it didn’t take long for Schwartzman to get back into the set as he broke back Cerundolo in the fifth game.
As not a single break point was seen in the remainder of the first set, the opener had to be resolved in a tie-break.
In the tie-break, Schwartzman saved Cerundolo’s two consecutive set points to tie the tie-break to six points apiece.
But then, Schwartzman lost the next two points as Cerundolo won a tight opener.
After losing a tight first set, Schwartzman’s game completely fell apart as he lost his serve three times in the second set and Cerundolo completed a straight-set win.
