on

World No 3 Daniil Medvedev has signed up to compete at an ATP 250 event in Zhuhai.

In 2019, the inaugural edition of the Zhuhai Championships took place.

Due to the pandemic, the Zhuhai Championships didn’t take place in the next couple of years.

But with the ATP calendar returning to China in 2023, the Zhuhai Championships is also set to host its second edition.

Daniil Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, will highlight this year’s Zhuhai player field.

“I’m really looking forward to coming back to China and playing at the Hengqin International Tennis Center. I can’t wait to see the city and the stadium, both of which I have heard a lot of good things about. It will be great to play again in front of the Chinese fans again after three years away. I’m looking forward to seeing you all in September,” Medvedev said in a statement.

Medvedev set for this week’s Madrid Masters

This week, Medvedev is set to compete at the Madrid Masters.

In Madrid, Medvedev is the second-seeded player and has a first-round bye.

After a first-round bye, Medvedev plays against the winner of the match between Andy Murray and Andrea Vavassori.

Meanwhile, Medvedev’s streak of five consecutive finals reached came to an end at the start of the clay season.

Between February and March, Medvedev made five consecutive finals on hard.

In his first clay tournament of the year at the Monte Carlo Masters, Medvedev made the quarterfinal before Holger Rune handed him a 6-3 6-4 defeat.

“It wasn’t easy for sure, it’s always tough to play Daniil. It was actually my first time playing against him in a real match, but we’ve practiced tonnes of times. I have huge respect for everything he’s done. The last week it was not easy to stop him but I’m happy I managed to do it,” Rune said after beating Medvedev.

It remains to be seen how well can Medvedev do this week in Madrid.
