Daniil Medvedev delays start of his summer on hard courts after Wimbledon SF loss

World No 3 Daniil Medvedev has withdrawn from next week’s Citi Open in Washington. Medvedev, 27, won’t be making his fourth Washington main draw appearance this year. Between 2017 and 2019, Medvedev made three consecutive appearances on the hard courts of Washington. After making the quarterfinal in his Washington debut in 2017, Medvedev suffered a second-round defeat at the tournament the following year. In 2019, Medvedev reached the Washington final before losing to Nick Kyrgios. This year, Medvedev was scheduled to play in Washington for the first time since 2019. But unfortunately, Medvedev – who made the Wimbledon semifinal earlier this year – is delaying the start of his summer on hard courts.

Medvedev likely to return to action in Toronto

After suffering a straight-set defeat to Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon semifinal, Medvedev was scheduled to play again in Washington. But now that Medvedev is out of Washington, he will likely return to action at the Toronto Masters, which starts on August 7th. After losing easily to Alcaraz in the Wimbledon semifinal, Medvedev was asked if he would need some time to overcome the defeat.

“Very tough to answer because usually I would say yes, but many times it happened to me that after some defeats I would have two, three tournaments really bad – how can we say – curve where I would play bad. I would be like, Probably it’s coming from the defeat, so I have to digest it better, get over it. Sometimes actually I was able to straightaway kind of jump from the defeat and let’s say win the next tournament or something like this. I mean, as I said previously, I cannot change the past. I can only try to play better next time. If I have one more semifinal of Wimbledon, I have to try to play better, serve better, miss less. That’s the only way I can go forward. Next tournaments, I need to try to do better, try to win them, try to play my best,” Medvedev said after exiting Wimbledon.
