ATP Dubai: Novak Djokovic’s wins, Medvedev and the day 3 Highlights

on

Novak Djokovic changed his stride completely and took a comfortable victory in the second round of the ATP 500 tournament in Dubai. The Serbian champion, compared to the debut match, did not encounter major problems and got rid of Tallon Griekspoor in an hour and 21 minutes of play.

The Serbian set the record straight from the first game and dominated all baseline exchanges. For Djokovic this is the fourteenth success of the season. The Serbian surpassed Steffi Graf and signed an incredible new record by spending 378 weeks at the top of the world rankings.

Compared to the past, tennis players’ careers have certainly become longer thanks to the help of technology and new recovery techniques between one match and another.

Djokovic: “The season is too long. Something needs to be done”

Djokovic, in a press conference before dwelling on the busy schedule that characterizes the world of tennis, explained “It’s something that happens in all sports. Everything evolves and everything improves. You have a completely different technology at your disposal. Many years ago we played tennis with a wooden racket Now we can use rackets built with very light materials that allow us to swing faster and have more control.

This is technology. Physical preparation and recovery, which are part of training, also count. Then the database grew a lot. The more technology advances, the more we gain insight into our tennis and what we can do with our strokes. Today everyone wants to play the big tournaments, so the competition is very, very high. The season is long; too long for me. I’ve been saying this for some time. I think it’s possible to organize our season in a better way.

It’s complicated. There are too many interests and governing bodies in tennis that decide the calendar. In general, I think tennis is in a good place, but we have to use the potential and global reach of the sport.

We are by no means making the most of that potential. We are one of the most watched sports in the world, with over a billion viewers. I feel that collectively we need to do a better job of promotion. Tennis is a very popular and historic sport. In terms of marketing and commercial potential it’s not that close to any other sport.”
