Assistant coach/advisor describes Andrey Rublev as ‘very warm, calm’ guy

Alberto Martin describes Andrey Rublev as “a very calm and warm” personality as he believes that the Russian is very likable in the locker room.

Martin, a former ATP player, studied psychology after concluding his pro tennis career.

At the start of this season, Martin joined Rublev’s staff as an assistant coach/advisor.

“Andrey Rublev is very calm and very warm. He does things that I haven’t seen many times in my life. He comes out of practice and signs autographs for everyone, all the people who are waiting. I remember that he came out of the game in Dubai and signed 45 minutes. I told him: ‘Man, you have to cool down’, but he doesn’t want to leave anyone without a signature. He says that it is part of his legacy, of what he wants to represent. He wants the fans to be happy. So we respect it,” Martin told ATP Tour en Espanol.

Martin: Rublev is loved by his colleagues

“In the locker room he is very loved by his [colleagues]. Everyone says that he is a very nice guy. And on the court he is very fair. He also surprised me that he launched his clothing brand. The motto is ‘play for the kids, play for the light’. And he has not done it on a commercial level but because he wanted to leave a message,” Martin said.

Rublev has been one of the best in the game for a couple of years now.

But Rublev has yet to make a big Grand Slam breakthrough or to win a Masters event.

Last year, Rublev admitted that his mental game wasn’t good enough for him to win the biggest tournaments.

“Everyone has their own weaknesses. My weakness is the mental one, and little by little I’m trying to improve that,” Rublev said in late 2022.

It remains to be seen if coach Martin can help Rublev improve his mental game and elevate his overall game to a new level.
