Alex de Minaur repeats Novak Djokovic after demolition loss to Jannik Sinner

Alex de Minaur repeated Novak Djokovic’s praise on Jannik Sinner after being dismantled by the Italian in the Davis Cup final. On Sunday, world No 4 Sinner beat top-ranked Australian Alex de Minaur 6-3 6-0 to seal Italy’s win over Australia in the Davis Cup final in Malaga. Sinner, who beat Djokovic in the group stage of the ATP Finals and also beat the Serb in Malaga, was evidently also playing full of confidence against de Minaur. “I think probably Novak [Djokovic] said maybe a week ago, Jannik [Sinner] is riding this amazing wave of confidence. He’s playing in indoor conditions with some heavy balls where he can hit the absolute crap out of the ball. He’s seriously impressive at the level he’s showing,” de Minaur said.

De Minaur agrees with Djokovic on Sinner’s level

After losing to Sinner in the group stage at the ATP Finals, Djokovic beat the Italian in the final in Turin. But in Malaga, Sinner beat Djokovic to help Italy beat Serbia in the semifinal. “He has one of the fastest forehands in the world, I wasn’t too surprised. I know Jannik’s qualities, but I thought he would drop a bit in doubles… But no, he maintained an extremely high level. I had many chances in singles, but he was finding great serves,” Djokovic said after losing to Sinner in Malaga. Meanwhile, world No 12 de Minaur vowed to continue working on his game after easily losing to Sinner in one of the most important matches of his career. De Minaur, 24, admitted he just “did not have enough” to beat Sinner. “I will find ways to get better, to be able to hurt these types of players. Today I just didn’t have enough. Disappointed I wasn’t able to give the boys a chance to play the doubles yet another year. That’s probably the biggest disappointment,” de Minaur said.
