Novak Djokovic has lost his first official match of the 2023 season as he and Vasek Pospisil have exited the Adelaide International doubles event.

On Monday, Djokovic and Pospisil played their doubles opener at the Adelaide International.

In what was a tight contest, Djokovic and Pospisil fell just short as Tomislav Brkic and Gonzalo Escobar claimed a 4-6 6-3 10-5.

Djokovic and Pospisil, who have been good friends for many years, debuted as a pair in Adelaide.

Unfortunately for them, they didn’t make a run.

How Djokovic, Pospisil lost to Brkic and Escobar

In the very first game of the match, Djokovic and Pospisil had a break point but Brkic and Escobar managed to save it.

Djokovic and Pospisil maybe didn’t get a break in the first game of the match but they did manage to get one in the third game.

After claiming an early break, Djokovic and Pospisil didn’t face a single break point in the rest of the first set and that’s how they won the opener.

Brkic and Escobar bounced back in the second set as they earned their first break of the match in the fourth game to take a 3-1 lead.

In the fifth game, Brkic and Escobar saved four break points to open a 4-1 lead.

Up 5-2, Brkic and Escobar had two set points on Djokovic and Pospisil’s serve but they didn’t convert as Djokovic and Pospisil managed to cut the deficit to 5-3.

In the ninth game, Djokovic and Pospisil had a break point but didn’t realize as Brkic and Escobar managed to send the match into a decider.

In the match tie-break, Djokovic and Pospisil had a 4-3 lead before Brkic and Escobar won five points in a row to take an 8-4 lead.

There was no coming back for Djokovic and Pospisil from that deficit as Brkic and Escobar converted their first match point to complete a comeback win.

Now, Djokovic switches his focus onto the Adelaide singles event.

In his Adelaide singles opener, Djokovic plays against Constant Lestienne.
