A former ace had harsh words for Lorenzo Musetti’s elimination in Madrid

on

According Paolo Bertolucci, Lorenzo Musetti seems to have wasted a great opportunity at the Masters 1000 in Madrid. The Italian tennis player experienced a rather negative day and stopped at his debut after having achieved excellent results both in Monte-Carlo and in Barcelona.

Yannick Hanfmann, current number 108 in the ATP ranking, put an end to his journey at the Mutua Madrid Open. Musetti did not resist in the first set and did not affect the important moments when he had the opportunity in the second half of the game.

The Italian talent was twice ahead by a break and had a terrible inning when he served for the set. All the insecurities shown throughout the match also played a fundamental role in the tie-break; a tie-break that rewarded the German.

The draw would have placed Musetti in front of far from impossible challenges. The Italian would have started with the favors of the forecast both against Daniel Altmaier and with the winner of the match between Matteo Arnaldi and Jaume Munar in the round of 16.

The Italian will have to take advantage of the next few weeks to rest and prepare for the last two important events on clay, namely the Internazionali BNL d’Italia and the Roland Garros. Musetti had to miss the Masters 1000 in Rome last year due to a leg injury.

Paolo Bertolucci, through his Twitter account, commented on Musetti’s misstep without hiding his disappointment: “Lorenzo Musetti is missing an easy access to the quarterfinals of the Masters 1000 in Madrid. A step backwards in the growth process.”

Considering the premature eliminations of Musetti and Lorenzo Sonego, there are three Italians still present in the main draw of the Mutua Madrid Open.

Arnaldi has already gained access to the third round thanks to the incredible success obtained against Casper Ruud. Marco Cecchinato and Andrea Vavassori will try to replicate their compatriot’s exploits tomorrow.

The former will find Alex de Minaur on the other side of the net; the second will be awaited by a super match with Daniil Medvedev.
